Why Is My Hair Constantly Falling Out? 7 Reasons Why

Whether it be in the shower or while you are combing through your hair, both men and women experience a bit of hair shedding daily. On average, it is normal to shed from between 50 to 100 hairs in a day. However, if you are experiencing excessive hair fall, then you probably should speak with our Papilla By Kim Lim trichologist on it.

What are the types of hair loss?

While we all know what hair loss is, how much do we actually know about the different types of hair loss? Allow us to break it down for you so that you can properly identify the type of hair loss you are experiencing.

  • Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic Alopecia is a hereditary hair thinning condition that can affect both men and women. This condition usually affects one in their 30s to 40s, but can begin at any time after puberty. Men with this condition suffer from male pattern baldness, while females experience female pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss.

The cause of this condition is genetics that cause the hair follicles to get thinner and thinner till the hair eventually sheds. The condition can be characterised by a receding hairline and the gradual shedding of hair from the frontal scalp and crown.

  • Telogen Effluvium

Telogen Effluvium is when one faces temporary hair loss due to excessive hair loss as a result of a traumatic life event that causes major body stress such as pregnancy. It occurs when there is an internal disruption of the natural hair cycle causing many hairs to shift into the rest phase resulting in excessive hair fall.

  • Anagen Effluvium

Anagen Effluvium is rapid hair loss that is usually caused by radiation therapy to the head such as chemotherapy. It occurs when the scalp undergoes rapid hair loss during the hair growth phase.

  • Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that causes unpredictable hair loss including hair fall in bald patches. When diagnosed with this autoimmune disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s cells. In the case of Alopecia Areata, the cells unknowingly attack the hair follicles.

7 Common Causes of Hair Loss

  1. 1. Hormonal Imbalance

Hormones are one of the most common causes for hair loss in both men and women. The hormone that affects hair loss is known as Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When you experience a hormonal imbalance, excess DHT in your body can affect your hair growth cycle and shrink your hair follicles, making it difficult for healthy hair to survive.

  1. 2. Stress

We’re sure you’ve heard of the expression that stress can cause your hair to fall off. Well, that is in fact, true. Although stress is a common feeling that nearly everyone experiences on a day to day basis, excessive amounts of stress can result in the sudden thinning of the hair, typically known as Telogen Effluvium.

  1. 3. Pregnancy

Experiencing hair loss after pregnancy is completely normal, in fact, between 40 to 50 percent of women experience postpartum hair loss according to the American Pregnancy Association. But fret not, because postpartum hair loss is usually temporary and your hair cycle will most likely go back to normal after 12 months.

  1. 4. Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid Disorders such as Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism are one of the most common hormone-related hair loss causes. The hair growth process is affected when the hormone production is disrupted.

When one has either both too little thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) and too much thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) it results in the hair to fall without replacement of new hairs strands.

  1. 5. Nutritional Deficiency

Nutritional deficiencies are a common cause for hair loss problems. Iron and zinc deficiencies are the most common nutritional factors affecting hair loss. Iron plays an essential role in the production of hair cell protein.

If you experience iron deficiency (anemia), the lack in hair cell protein will cause the hair strands to fall, resulting in hair loss.

  1. 6. Age

For our ladies, we understand that going through menopause is an arduous process with so many bodily changes taking place at once. However, it is important to remember that as we age, our hair ages and gets finer naturally as well.

Please do not worry because it’s an entirely normal part of the aging process.

  1. 7. Medical Conditions

A variety of medical conditions can inflict temporary or permanent hair loss as a side effect including:

  • Autoimmune Disease (Alopecia Areata)

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Diabetes

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

  • Scalp Infections (Ringworm)

However, fret not if you fall within this category as many of these nongenetic causes for hair loss can be successfully treated with the right hair loss treatment to make your hair grow healthily again.
